recipe of the week: pasta bolognese

One of the things that I enjoy most is trying out new recipes for my little munchkin.  So I decided that I will share some of my (and Sasha's) favorites weekly.  This recipe for pasta bolognese comes from the Baby Love cookbook.  This meat sauce is full of veggies and very easy to make....plus it will be enough for about 12 to 15 portions, so freeze the rest and defrost as needed and serve with fresh pasta.  It is so yummy you may want to eat some yourself!

Sasha loves the little star pasta, but you can use any other small shape pasta for your little one. Use whole grain pastas to bump up the nutritional value :)

*A little trick that I use when freezing food is that I freeze it in the baby ice cube trays, and then the next day I empty the trays into a freezer zip lock bag.  I label the contents of the bag and the date I made it so that there is no guess-work later.  This way you don't have to buy a ton of the expensive trays and you can have everything labeled clearly :)

Pasta Bolognese
*Yield 42 ounces
*Good for babies 12 months +

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup celery, very small diced
1/4 cup carrot, very small diced
1/2 cup yellow onion, very small diced
8 cloves garlic, smashed and chopped
8 ounces ground beef, lean (less than 10% fat)
1 teaspoon tomato paste
28 ounces canned tomatoes, crushed
6 to 8 ounces of water, as needed
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Grated Parmesan cheese, as needed
Cooked pasta

1) Add olive oil to a 4-quart pot over medium-high heat.
2) Add celery, carrot, onion, and garlic.  Sweat for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring often.  Onion should be translucent and soft.
3) Add ground beef and cook for about 3 minutes until almost cooked through.
4) Add tomato paste to the pot.  Stir with a spoon so it coats all the vegetables.  Cook another 2 to 3 minutes.
5) Add crushed tomatoes.  Mix together and bring to a simmer.  Reduce heat until you have a slow simmer.  Add water if sauce is really thick.  Stir occasionally and simmer 20 minutes.
6) Add basil and oregano.  Simmer 5 more minutes.
7) Toss 1/2 cup of this sauce with a1/2 cup of cooked pasta and top with Parmesan.

*Before freezing make sure that the sauce has cooled completely.  Do not freeze the sauce with pasta.*

It's Been 2 Months....Sorry!!!

Hello again.  I will spare you all from having to read the countless excuses that I have made for myself for not posting for the past 2 months......so all you need to know is that I am back and full of enthusiasm (and ideas and new baby products to report on!)  :)  So now that that is out of the way, I MUST fill you in on all that has happened during my hiatus:

1) Sasha is WALKING!
2) She turned one.....and we celebrated :)

Ok, when I started the list I thought that there would be a lot to report, but in all honesty this summer has been full playing outside, barbecuing, weekends with friends......plus running around and cleaning up after Sasha (a neverending, exhausting, and maddening process).

On another note, 2 months ago I promised you guys pictures from our photoshoot with the amazingly wonderful VZ Moda Photography.  So please enjoy them and make an appointment for your little one IMMEDIATELY :)

Genious travel idea #1

Ok, so before the big Florida trip I was reading some traveling with babies blogs, most of which were completely unspectacular....and made up of information that most parents with any common sense can figure out without reading travel blogs.....BUT I did read a great tip from a mom that I thought was genious, until I thought of how it could be even more genious :)  So here is what I read:  that instead of trying to pack all of your necessities for baby (such as diapers, wipes, formula, and the list goes on and on and on!) you should ship a box full of necessities to the place that you are staying.  Most hotels will keep the box for you at the front desk if you call ahead and ask.  Now I thought that this was a REALLY good idea, but then I thought about the cost of shipping everything versus the cost of bringing another piece of luggage on the plane, and it didn't quite make sense.

So here's MY twist on this: why not order all of you essentials from a website such as diapers.com or amazon.com, which offer FREE SHIPPING on most purchases over a certain dollar amount!  That way you don't have to lug all of the bulky essentials and you don't have to pay for shipping (not mention the fact that you don't have to go to the post office either!).  I know, I know.......GENIOUS!  You can thank me later :)

Another pic of Sasha with the new camera :)

PS - We did an amazing photoshoot for Sasha yesterday with a very talented photographer.  I can't wait to see all of the pics.....and share them with you :) :) :)

And.....I'm Back!

Hello lovelies :)  So sorry for my hiatus from the blogging world but I have been on hiatus from my regular life too!  My little family (Sasha, my hubby, and I......for those of you who don't know!) went on our first trip together to Florida.  It was a trip filled with firsts for Sasha: first flight, first time sleeping away from home, first time in the sand, first time in the ocean, first time going to the zoo, first time trying ice cream......and those were just the stand-out's!  All in all, it was one of the most memorable trips for my husband and I since we got to experience all of these things together.  Oh yes, and we got an amazing new camera (thanks to my mother-in-law) which my husband got quite skilled at using on this trip......honestly, it was just amazing to take pictures of Sasha!  I can't wait to share all of my newly found wisdom on traveling with a 10 and 1/2 month old....but in the meantime, I'm just reliving the trip through these pictures :)

The Shower Hug

shower hug.jpg
The Shower Hug - $30 at showerhug.com
I am continuously coming across products now that would have been very useful when I was pregnant, breastfeeding, or anytime BEFORE now.  Well I recently discovered a new item that is apparently a miracle item for breastfeeding mamas.  It is called "The Shower Hug" and it is a therapeutic terry cloth wrap that provides comfort and support for your bustline, and soothes sensitive nipples........sounds nice, right?  Oh yeah, and apparently it also does wonders for recovering from plastic surgery on your breasts.......so you can use it now while breastfeeding, and later when you get your breasts fixed from all of the damage that breastfeeding caused, haha :)

Going Out to Eat With Baby

Going to a restaurant with a baby may seem almost impossible sometimes, but with the right tools it can be easy (or as easy as it can be taking a baby out to eat!).  Here's my list of must-haves that I always keep in my car:

Bright Starts Cozy Cart Cover, Pink
Bright Starts Cozy Cart Cover - On Sale $26.50 (Original $29.99) at Amazon

1) Shopping Cart/High Chair Cover - Yes, I am one of those crazy moms that puts their baby in these covers when going out anywhere.....but if you only knew the amount of germs those high chairs and shopping carts hold you would also do it!  And plus my baby loves to put her mouth on EVERYTHING so this is a must-have.  sAlso, it has loops where you can attach toys for your little one to stay entertained.  This is the one that I have for Sasha, but you can pretty much get any one of them and it will serve the same purpose.

Summer Infant Tiny Diner
Summer Infant Tiny Diner - $10.99 at Amazon

Neat Solutions Biodegradable Table Topper Disposable Stick-on Placemat
Disposable Stick-On Placemat (30 Count) - $14.99 at Amazon
2) Placemats - Sasha loves to eat by herself nowadays, which means that she eats with her hands.  I have to lay out the crackers, fruit, etc. in front of her, and it feels pretty gross for her to be eating off of the table at a restaurant.  The first placemat that is pictured above is a reusable rubber placemat that can be wiped clean, has suction cups on the back, a built in scoop that catches th inevitable messes, and rolls into itself for easy storing.  If you think that this is too much of a hassle, there are also the disposable stick-on placemats that are pictured above.  They come in a variety of different designs, and you can buy generic ones from Babies R Us or Target for less money.  Both great options!

BooginHead SippiGrip - $5.99 at Amazon

3) SippiGrip - I have TONS of these SippiGrip's in my diaper bag and at home at all times!  They are so great because you can attach them to any sippy cup, bottle, or toy, and then attach the other side to a high chair, stroller, or any other thing.  This way, when Sasha decides that it is hilarious to throw her cups on the ground, I don't have to get up and wash it.  They come in every possible color combination too :)

These are the main MUST HAVES, but I always am well prepared with lots of food, snacks, bibs,a sippy cup, and wipes.  So make sure that your baby has plenty to keep busy with so that you can have a nice time when you go out next time :)

Making New Friends is Always Good.......Well, Sometimes!

One of the new habits I've recently picked up (after having Sasha!) is that I somehow find it ok to talk to random women with children in public places.  I've made a couple of friends at the park, another at Target, and some more at the mall.  My husband finds this hilarious, but I think it's nice that we mamas can bond over our little ones with perfect strangers :)  Anyway, the whole point of this story is that I met a mom this way who has a little girl Sasha's age....we talked a few times, and then she invited me to lunch with a mommy group who all have babies within a month of Sasha's age.  Since I really like her, of course, I said yes......but I was a little worried that I wouldn't fit it in since I'm not the typical stay-at-home mom in the area where I live.

The day of the lunch, I was getting dressed and considered my clothing options......I wanted to wear one of my flouncy tops with skinny jeans and heels, but then I reconsidered.  I decided to wear a cute t-shirt, with jeans, and some fashion sneakers......and thank G-D!  I showed up there, and I was by far the most dressed up as it was! Lunch was not as friendly as I had hoped....some of the moms said hi, while others didn't.  And literally no one asked me a single question about myself and only cared about Sasha's developmental milestones, and if their children are at the same levels.  It seemed like I had to prove Sasha's superiority in order to just keep up!  While it is definitely nice to have friends with babies, this is definitely not the kind of socializing I will be doing in the future.

The one thing that I did love about this lunch is that literally every one of the moms (including myself!) busted out their arsenal of accessories that we take in order to eat with our little ones.  I'm sure that it looked absolutely hilarious to any passerby, but all of these things are absolutely necessary (I swear!).  I will share my personal dining out essentials in tomorrow's post...so look out for it!
Enjoying the day at the park this weekend :)

Pity Party (For One!)

Hello Friends :) So sorry for brief my hiatus from the blogging world, but I am full of amazing excuses (of course!).  Here goes:

1) My husband got sick......so I had two children to take care of for days....oh yeah, plus my doggie babies :)
2) Sasha got sick as soon as my husband got better (this is the first time in her 9 month life!)
3) I got sick from Sasha because I (for some unknown reason!) didn't think that she could get me sick.....so I was kissing her from her head to toe as usual

So, you guys get it, right?!?  Am I allowed to throw myself a pity party?  I am forgiven?  Well, thank you very much!  Now we can move on to the interesting stuff!

2 years ago today I was standing on an island in Mexico with all of the most important people in my life, and getting married!!!!!  It was the most enchanting and unbelievable day....and truly one of the most amazing days of my life.  I want to share some of the fabulous pictures (done by the talented Paul Birman!!!!) from that day so that we can take a little walk down memory lane :)  By the way, check out his other work....it's slightly FANTASTIC!

Obsession du Jour: dapple

dapple - $5.99 at Diapers.com

I hope that you mommies out there have switched all of your regular household cleaning products to natural cleaning products because many of the ingredients in regular products are toxic to babies!  Although this was a bit of an investment I have done so a while ago, but I'm constantly looking for new products that really get the job done.  My newest obsession is a dish washing liquid called "dapple".......it is AMAZING for washing all things baby.  It is all natural and safely removes breast milk, formula, and other baby foods.  I wish I had discovered this earlier when I was still breastfeeding, since it would have been perfect for washing the stubborn breast milk off of bottles.  And it's affordable at only $5.99.  Here are some of dapple's features:
  • Rinses fast
  • Natural-based ingredients
  • Phtalate-free, paraben-free, SLES- & dye-free
  • Fragranced with pure lavender essential oil
  • Biodegradable
  • Not tested on animals
  • Certified to contain no detectable levels of dioxane
Try it and you will be obsessed too :)

9 Months Later :)

This weekend my hubby was sick, so Sasha and I spent most of the weekend lounging (away from him!), and taking lots and lots of pictures.  It made me realize that she has gotten so BIG lately, it's absolutely insane.  Today my little princess in 9 months old!  Time flies......

Also, Happy happy happy birthday to the most amazing mama in the world (MINE!) :)

vacation vacation vacation!

Today has been a long day with Sasha.....but it's ok because it was finalized today that we are going on VACATION!!!  We have not gone anywhere for over a year and a half, so we are long long long overdue.  A family friend was absolutely amazingly generous and is letting us stay at their Fort Lauderdale condo...with Sasha :) Once the initial excitement wore off, my head started spinning from thinking about all of the things that I would have to bring for Sasha, how we're actually going to travel with her, etc, etc, etc.  Since I am crazy (just kidding, but I kind of am), I now need to do SOOOOOO much research (and shopping!) in order to prepare for this trip.  So I will report back on all of the things that I find out about travel with a baby and everthing that she will need for the summer weather...which should help all of you to plan for your summer vacation, or staycation!  In the meantime, I will try not to have a panic attack :)

thredUP

I buy way too much for Sasha, I am aware of it, and it's a problem......but it is so hard to resist all of the cute stuff out there!!! Regardless of what your financial situation is, you are probably overspending on children's clothing and toys.  And then once your child wears the clothes, they don't fit into them within a couple of months.  I already have a couple of 50 gallon bins filled with clothes that Sasha has grown out of wasting space in my basement.....  Well now there is a solution!
thredUp.com is a website that lets you trade a box of your gently used clothing for someone else's box.  There are descriptions of what comes in each box and the "sellers" are rated, which is wonderful!  It's super easy and reliable.....and all you pay is a $5 fee and for the shipping of the box (approximately $10.95).  Any box that you send ships free because the "buyer" pays for the shipping. Here are the step-by-step instructions from the site:

Very simply put, it works like this: pick a box you like, pay $5 plus shipping, prepare a box of items that no longer fit your child, when someone picks your box, send it for free. Here is the step-by-step version:

PICK - Browse boxes listed in the thredUP community and select one you'd like to receive. Hopefully, by now, you have your friends on thredUP so you can just pick their boxes. If you're busy, tell us your clothing preferences and the experts at thredUP can choose a box for you.
PAY - Once you've picked your box, all you pay is $5 plus shipping to have it delivered.
PREPARE - As part of this process, you are required (this is a swap after all!) to list a box of clothes that your child no longer wears. We'll ask for basic details such as types of clothing, number of items, colors, brands, season and sizes. Don't worry, the USPS will mail you empty boxes for your gently used clothes.
SEND - When someone picks your box, thredUP will alert you and ask you to send this box. It is free to send boxes on thredUP because the recipient pays the shipping. You'll be able to print the shipping label and schedule the pickup all in one click. Would you rather drop it off at the Post Office? No problem! Just cancel the pickup and leave a note for your postal carrier. As soon as your box is tracked by the USPS, you will see your box status has been changed to "shipped" in your thredUP closet.

Happy swapping!!!!!

Must-Give (or Have!) Baby Gifts

It feels like everyone around me has been hit with BABY FEVER lately!  While this is amazing because we can all share our experiences, have play dates later, etc......it also means that we have to buy lots of gifts for lots of babies/baby showers. Now that I'm a mom I have a few must have (or give!) gifts for the new mommies out there.  So go get them for your friends (or for yourself) :)

Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether - On Sale $17.05 (original $23.90) at Amazon

  1) Sophie the Giraffe has some sort of magic power over most of the babies that I know.  Don't ask me to explain it, but it is amazing.  The rubber is soft for babies gums and it's lightweight and easy for them to handle.  Sophie has been Sasha's favorite toy from the start, and it is a definite MUST HAVE for any baby.
Aden + Anais 100% Cotton Muslin Swaddle Wrap, 4 Pack - $44 at Amazon
2) These muslin swaddle wraps are to die for!  I got them as a gift when Sasha was first born from a relative with a baby and she told me that these were her favorite.  I had seen them in stores and it seemed absolutely insane to me to spend $44 on lightweight cotton blankets.  Once I used them I realized what all the hype was about.  They are so soft, lightweight, and breathable.  I used them for swaddling, I use them currently as lightweight blankets, I drape them over stroller for shade......I just can't say enough about them.  There are many, many different designs so check them out!

My First Taggies Cloth Bedtime Book: Sweet Dreams - Scholastic - Toys"R"Us
My First Taggie Cloth Bedtime Book - $12.95 at Babies R Us
 3) I love these cloth books because your baby can play with this book, you can take anywhere with you, and you can wash it when your baby spits up all over it!  Plus, the different colors and textures of the tags are very interesting to most babies.  Great little gift :)
The Original Tie Monthly Onesie Stickers....Different Plaid Tie for each Month Actually Looks like a Tie....Original Seller....UNCUT PLEASE READ
Monthly Onesie Stickers - $9 at Purple Possom

Monthly Onesie Stickers...NEW Waterproof Stickers EXTRA Durable...Original Izzy...Original Seller
Monthy Onesie Stickers - $9 at Purple Possom

Sasha at 1 Month with her onesie sticker :)
4) Monthly onesie stickers are such a cute way to commemorate each month of your baby's life.  You just stick each sticker on a onesie when the time comes and take lots and lots of adorable pics.  The stickers then come right off and don't even ruin the onesie.  There are literally a hundred different designs on the Purple Possom site, and there are even stickers that you can get personalized with your baby's name.  How cute is that?

My Other Children

Benji, Maggie, and I in Michigan 2009

Ok, so now that we've gotten to know each other I'm going to let you in on a little secret......I have two more children......their names are Maggie and Benji, and I ADORE them :)  Maggie is a feisty 5 1/2 year old Boxer mix and Benji is a kind 6 year old Lab mix.  Before Sasha came into my world, they were my world.  So it kind of breaks my heart when I can't give them as much attention or walk them as often as I used to.  They are a huge pain in my butt a lot of the time (especially now that Sasha is crawling and I need to clean up their fur nonstop!), but they are the most loyal and lovable companions. To add to it, Sasha loves her "siblings"!

Get It Together!!!!!

Let me paint you a picture:  It's about 1 pm on Friday and Sasha is dressed in an adorable outfit (of course!) with a matching headband, socks, and shoes.......I am still in my pajamas, haven't brushed my teeth, my hair is looking a mess, and I'm obviously not wearing any makeup.  I bring Sasha over by the mirror so that she can see how cute she looks...and that's when I black out from horror.....well not really, but I should have!

There is NO REASON that I couldn't have spent a couple of minutes getting myself together that morning. This was so not like me....who was this person in the mirror?  The best part about this scenario is that I still dressed my little girl like she was going to a party.  Moral of the story: get it together Kate!

I know I'm not the only mom that has almost fainted from the sight of themselves in the mirror.  So, lets all vow to spend those couple extra minutes a day.  I am a pro at 5 minute makeup, so if you need to get together in a snap too here are my fave products to look fresh and together in no time.

Tinted Moisturizer
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer
$42 at Sephora

Step 1:  Apply Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer all over your face.  This is an amazing product because it provides light coverage, has SPF 20, and moisturizes.  It is a little expensive but I LOVE it!

Trish McEvoy Dual Resort Bronzer Dual Resort One Size
Trish McEvoy Dual Resort Bronzer
$32 at Amazon.com
Step 2:  Apply bronzer with a brush where the sun would naturally hit your face.  I love the Trish McEvoy dual bronzer because I like that it isn't too dark, and that I can decide which color to use, or blend them as needed.

The Multiple - Orgasm
NARS The Multiple in Orgasm
$39 at Sephora

Step 3:  Apply a cream blush, such as NARS Orgasm on your cheekbones, and blend with your fingers.  This is a universally flattering color....and the multiple literally lasts FOREVER!

L'Oreal Millionize Mascara
$7.97 at Walmart

Step 4:  Apply 2 coats of mascara on your top lashes.  I am consistently trying new mascaras and my newest obsession is the L'Oreal Millionize mascara.  And at under $10 the price can't be beat :)
Sugar Rosé Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15
Fresh Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment
$22.50 at Sephora
Step 5:  Apply a tinted lip balm.  This Fresh Sugar Rose tinted lip treatment smells amazing, is extremely moisturizing, has SPF 15, and gives you the prettiest rosey pout.  Amazing :)

Walk It Out

I was raised in a family of walkers.....and talkers, but that's a subject for another day......I literally cannot remember a day that my parents didn't walk our family dog.  When I moved out and got my own dogs I walked them too.  So the logical thing to do with Sasha when I had her was walk her :)  All joking aside, Sasha and I walk for hours a day, and have been doing that since the day she was born.  Not only does it make me feel good, but Sasha loves it, and it definitely helped me shed the baby weight!

While walking is wonderful, I am not a girl that has ever felt the need to sacrifice fashion for comfort.  Since I walk everyday, it's important for me to look good doing it.  While I can appreciate a good pair of gym shoes, here are some stylish alternatives for you moms on the run!
